Accessibility and Testing Accommodations

The STAAR assessment is designed so that all children can show the skills and knowledge they have learned over the course of the school year. For identified students, there are accommodations that are available that assist the student in accessing the test through the environment or features/tools available on the online platform.  The accommodations made available on the STAAR test are similar to those commonly used in the classroom throughout the school year.  There are three categories of accommodations that can be used during testing.
 
  • Accessibility Features: These are testing procedures and materials that may be used by any student who routinely and effectively uses them in the classroom. There are no eligibility criteria for students to be eligible for these features.
  • Locally-Approved Designated Supports: These are testing procedures and materials that are available only to students who meet specific eligibility criteria.  Academic committees that serve the student(PST, 504, ARD, LPAC) have to verify that the student meets the requirements in order to receive the designated support.  Additionally, data on the student should indicate that the support is routinely and effectively used. 
  • State-Approved Designated Supports: These are testing procedures and materials that are rare and require advance approval from TEA.  A student must not be able to use any accessibility feature or locally-approved designated support to address the need.  Academic committees that serve the student(PST, 504, ARD, LPAC) have to verify that the student meets the requirements in order to receive the designated support and a request is made to TEA for final approval.
